About the university

General information

  • Location: the historic main building is at Universitätsring 1 in central Vienna; the faculties and institutes are spread across various locations in the city.
  • Founded: 1365 – one of the oldest universities in Europe and the oldest in Austria
  • Language of instruction: most bachelor's programmes are mainly in German; at master's level there are both German-language programmes and a number of entirely English-language ones
  • Main fields: law, economics and business, psychology, political science, sociology, communication science, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, philosophy, history, philology and education

Deadlines

For applicants with Bulgarian citizenship and a Bulgarian diploma (i.e. from the EU), the deadlines depend on whether the programme has an admission procedure:

  • Programmes without an admission procedure, winter semester 2026/27: applications from 22 June to 5 September 2026; final enrolment from 13 July to 31 October 2026
  • Programmes with an admission procedure (Aufnahmeverfahren): for 2026/27 registration ran from 2 March to 4 May 2026

Semesters

  • Winter semester: 1 October – 28 February
  • Summer semester: 1 March – 30 September

Bachelor's programmes

Law (Rechtswissenschaften) – Mag. iur.

  • Duration: 4 years (8 semesters), 240 ECTS
  • Location: Juridicum, Vienna
  • Start: in the winter or summer semester, but the admission procedure runs once a year
  • Admission: compulsory admission procedure, 1,700 places
  • Completion: Mag. iur. – the classic legal education that prepares you for professions such as lawyer, judge, prosecutor, notary or lawyer in public administration and the private sector

Admission test: for 2026/27 it was on 7 July 2026 in Vienna, around 2 hours, fee €50. Structure:

  • 25% – a specialised section based on the set reading list
  • 50% – reading comprehension in German and English
  • 25% – cognitive abilities (logical tasks and inferences from short texts)

Deadlines: for 2026/27 applications ran from 2 March to 4 May 2026. After a successful procedure, enrolment is possible for the winter semester (13 July – 31 October 2026) or the summer semester (11 January – 31 March 2027).

Requirements:

  • a recognised Bulgarian diploma – all pages are uploaded in the u:space system
  • German at C1 level; if you don't yet have C1, under certain conditions you can first take the VWU (Vorstudienlehrgang) preparatory course
  • if you don't have enough Latin from school, you must sit an additional Latin exam in the first part of your studies

After your studies: 4 years of law → all exams and a thesis → Mag. iur. This does not yet make you a lawyer. To become a Rechtsanwalt in Austria, a separate professional stage follows Mag. iur. – legal practice, working as a trainee lawyer and finally the bar exam. For judge, prosecutor and notary there are separate procedures.

International Law (Internationale Rechtswissenschaften) – LL.B.

  • Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
  • Start: in the winter or summer semester; the admission procedure runs once a year and applies to the following winter and summer semesters
  • Language: a bilingual programme – German and English; English at B2 level is a condition for admission
  • Admission: compulsory procedure with 250 places for 2026/27 – an Online Self-Assessment and, if needed, a written test in German and English, around 2 hours, fee €50

Important: the path 3 years LL.B. → 2-year master's in international law (LL.M.) → professional practice → bar exam leads to the same professional qualification as the classic law programme. The LL.B. itself allows you to work, for example, in international companies, legal departments, compliance, administration, non-governmental and international organisations, but does not give you the right to practise the regulated professions of lawyer, judge or notary.

Business Administration (Betriebswirtschaft) – BSc

  • Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS; up to 30 ECTS can be chosen from other fields (Erweiterungscurricula)
  • Start: in the winter or summer semester; the procedure runs once for the whole year – for 2026/27 successful applicants enrol for winter semester 2026/27 or summer semester 2027
  • Language: mainly German (C1 is a condition for admission); the programme also includes Business English, for which English B2 is required before the first year
  • Admission: compulsory procedure, 449 places – an online self-assessment and, if there are enough applicants, a written test. For 2026/27 there was a test: for Betriebswirtschaft and Internationale Betriebswirtschaft together, 2,270 applicants competed for 1,122 places.
  • Admission test: for 2026/27 it was on 8 July 2026 in Vienna, around 2 hours, mainly in German with separate sections in English, fee €50. The university provides official materials and sample questions.

Core subjects: management, marketing, accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, IT, business law, economic sociology and Business English.

After the bachelor's: management, controlling, accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, consulting, banking, insurance, sales and corporate governance, or a master's degree.

Journalism and Communication Science – BA

  • Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS; 60 ECTS can be chosen outside the main subject
  • Start: in the winter or summer semester; the procedure runs once a year
  • Language: German – a condition for admission
  • Admission: compulsory procedure with registration and the corresponding steps. For 2026/27 no written test was held, because there were not enough applicants.

After the bachelor's: journalism, PR, corporate communications, marketing, advertising, social media, media companies, public affairs, communication agencies, non-governmental organisations and institutions, or a master's degree in the same field.

Medicine in Vienna is studied at the separate Medical University – see the MedUni Wien page.
