City: Vienna. Places 2026/27: 704 medicine, 80 dentistry.

About the university

Medicine

  • Duration: 6 years (12 semesters), 360 ECTS, including clinical-practical training and a practical year (Klinisch-Praktisches Jahr) in the 11th and 12th semesters. It concludes with the title Dr. med. univ.
  • Location: the Medical University of Vienna, with its main clinical base at Universitätsklinikum AKH Wien
  • Start: in practice once a year, in the winter semester
  • Places for 2026/27: 704 for medicine and 80 for dentistry – 784 in total (the numbers for 2027/28 have not been published yet)

Admission through MedAT-H

Unlike Germany, there is no quota based purely on diploma grades, no university-run selection and no TMS – your diploma grade does not directly affect the ranking. What decides it is your MedAT-H score.

Applying: through the common Austrian platform for admission to medicine (MedAT / medizinstudieren.at). To sit the test, your diploma does not need to have been issued yet – you only need to prove your right of admission to university once you are offered a place and enrol.

Deadlines for 2027:

  • March 2027 – online registration and payment of the fee. The exact 2027 dates and the fee are set in the admission regulation for 2027/28, which has not been published yet – in 2026 the window was 2–31 March and the fee was €110.
  • 9 July 2027 (provisional) – MedAT, held on the same day in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz
  • calendar week 32 – results, if the 2026 pattern is kept
  • August – 5 September 2027 – enrolment period; in 2026 it ran from 3 August to 5 September, and enrolment for the first semester has to be completed by 5 September each year

Only if you are ranked and offered a place does MedUni send you a message to reserve your place, along with instructions for enrolling. That is when you present your diploma and the other documents.

Sections of MedAT-H:

  • Basic knowledge (BMS) – 40%: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics
  • Text comprehension (TV) – 10%
  • Cognitive abilities (KFF) – 40%: logic, memory, spatial thinking, pattern recognition, etc.
  • Social-emotional competencies (SEK) – 10%: recognising and regulating emotions, and social decision-making

BMS and KFF together make up 80% of the result, so preparation in the natural sciences and for the cognitive tasks is decisive.

Note: quotas for applicants with a Bulgarian diploma

Bulgaria is an EU country, but medicine in Austria has a special allocation:

  • at least 95% of places are for EU citizens and those treated as equivalent
  • at least 75% are reserved for applicants with an Austrian matura or certain equivalent diplomas
  • in practice around 20% remain for applicants from other EU countries

With a Bulgarian matura you generally compete in the EU quota, not the Austrian one.

Matura subjects: you do not have to have a matura in biology or chemistry to take the MedAT, but this knowledge is very important for the test itself. Your diploma must give recognised general admission rights to university.

Competition: MedUni Wien is extremely competitive.
