Grade converter

Enter the overall average from your diploma (3.00 to 6.00). The calculator turns it into the German grade with the formula most German universities and uni-assist use.

German grade

–

1.0 is the best, 4.0 the lowest pass

This result is a guide only and not binding. Some universities and programmes calculate the grade their own way — only the grade you receive officially from uni-assist or the university counts.

How it is calculated

Most German universities use the KMK's modified Bavarian formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (6 − your average) / (6 − 3). The result is cut off after the first decimal, not rounded — 1.75 becomes 1.7.

When you need the German grade

For programmes with restricted admission (numerus clausus, NC) in Germany, places are given mainly by grade. Applicants are ranked by their German grade — 1.0 is the best.

Many German universities ask for a VPD from uni-assist when you apply with a Bulgarian diploma; it converts your average into a German grade with the same formula. That is the grade you apply with.

For medicine, dentistry and pharmacy you apply through Hochschulstart — and the converted grade is used there too.

What NC means and how to judge your chances

NC is not a fixed threshold but the grade of the last applicant admitted in the previous round. It differs every year and at every university. So the grade alone does not tell you whether you will get in — what matters is which programmes and universities you compare it with.

Good to know

  • The grade that counts is worked out by the university or uni-assist from your original diploma. The calculator uses the formula most of them apply, but some universities round differently or weigh individual subjects. So the result is a guide without guarantee, not a decision.
  • For programmes with restricted admission (NC) in Germany this is the grade you are ranked by: the closer to 1.0, the better your chances.
  • Austria has no single official conversion, and most programmes there admit without ranking by grade. For medicine the MedAT entrance test decides, not the diploma.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Bulgarian grade converted into a German one?

With the KMK's modified Bavarian formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (6 − average) / 3. The result is cut off after the first decimal. For example, an average of 5.50 gives a German grade of 1.5, and 5.00 gives 2.0.

Which average should I enter?

The overall average stated in your secondary school diploma. The official conversion is done by uni-assist or the university from the original document.

What grade do I need for medicine in Germany?

In the quota based on grades alone (about 30% of places) you usually need grades around 1.0. In the universities' own selection (about 60%), the TMS, professional experience or service count besides the grade, so applicants with a slightly weaker grade also have a chance.

What does NC mean?

Numerus clausus is the grade of the last applicant admitted in the previous round. It is not announced in advance and changes every year.

Does the calculator work for Austria and the Netherlands?

Austria has no single official conversion, and most programmes admit without ranking by grade; for medicine the MedAT decides. In the Netherlands most bachelor's programmes do not select by grade either, and programmes with limited places run their own selection.

How accurate is the result?

The calculator uses the formula uni-assist and most universities apply, so the result is a good guide — but it is not binding. Some universities calculate their own way. Only the grade you receive officially counts.
