About the university

General information

  • Location: London, United Kingdom. The main campus is in Bloomsbury in central London; the newer UCL East campus is in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London.
  • Founded: 1826
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Main fields: UCL has 11 faculties – arts and humanities, brain sciences (including psychology), the built environment (including architecture at the Bartlett), engineering, education (IOE), law, life sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, medical sciences, population health and social and historical sciences (including economics).
  • Length of a bachelor's degree: usually 3 years; Medicine takes 6 years. Some courses lead to an integrated master's degree (MEng, MSci) and take longer.
  • Fees: applicants from Bulgaria normally pay the international (overseas) fee unless they have settled or pre-settled status in the UK. For entry in 2027/28 it ranges from £30,700 to £48,600 a year depending on the course – for example £36,800 for Law, £40,800 for Economics, £44,400 for most science, engineering and psychology courses and £48,600 for Computer Science. For most courses UCL guarantees that the international fee will not increase during the degree. Medicine (MBBS) costs £59,600 in the first year and is excluded from this guarantee.

Deadlines

Undergraduate

You apply through UCAS. For entry in the 2027/28 academic year, applications opened on 12 May 2026 and run until:

  • 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time – Medicine (MBBS)
  • 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time – all other undergraduate courses (UCAS equal consideration deadline)

Some courses may stay open after 13 January, but only if places are still available – check UCAS and do not rely on it.

Many courses also require an admissions test – depending on the course this is TARA, TMUA, LNAT or UCAT. The course page states which test applies. TARA and TMUA are sat at Pearson VUE test centres; for 2027 entry the test windows are 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027. Booking closes about two weeks before each window.

Requirements when applying from Bulgaria

UCL accepts the Bulgarian Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie. The required grades depend on the course's A-level offer. Examples for 2027 entry:

  • **Courses asking for A\*A\*A** (e.g. Computer Science): an overall mark of at least 5.80 and two state matriculation exams passed at 5.8
  • **Courses asking for A\*AA** (e.g. Economics, Law): an overall mark of at least 5.65 and two state matriculation exams passed at 5.8 and 5.5

Where a course names required subjects, at least one of them must be taken as an elective state matriculation exam (A\* = 5.8, A = 5.5, B = 5.0). Any further required subjects must be studied as part of the diploma and passed with 6. If Mathematics is required, it must be taken as a state matriculation exam. Alternatively, UCL accepts one completed year of a bachelor's degree at a Bulgarian institution it recognises, with an average of 5 ("Very Good").

English language: every course is assigned a level. With IELTS Academic, UCL's preferred test:

  • Level 1: 6.5 overall, at least 6.0 in each component
  • Level 2: 7.0 overall, at least 6.5 in each component
  • Level 3: 7.0 overall, at least 7.0 in each component
  • Level 4: 7.5 overall, at least 7.0 in each component
  • Level 5: 8.0 overall, at least 8.0 in each component

Courses

Computer Science (BSc)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Fee: £48,600 per year (2027/28)
  • UCAS code: G400
  • Deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Requirements: the A-level offer is A\*A\*A with an A\* in Mathematics or Further Mathematics. For the Bulgarian diploma this means an overall mark of at least 5.80 and two state matriculation exams at 5.8 – one of them must be Mathematics. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.

TARA: for 2027/28 entry, all applicants sit the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions alongside their UCAS application. It has a critical thinking part and a problem-solving part (multiple choice, 40 minutes each) and a writing task (40 minutes) – 2 hours in total. There is a fee for the test. If you miss the October window, the January window (4–8 January 2027) is the remaining option.

English language: Level 1 – IELTS at least 6.5, with no component below 6.0.

Economics (BSc Econ)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Fee: £40,800 per year (2027/28)
  • UCAS code: L100
  • Deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Requirements: the A-level offer is A\*AA with an A\* in Mathematics. For the Bulgarian diploma this means an overall mark of at least 5.65 and two state matriculation exams at 5.8 and 5.5. Mathematics must be one of them, and because UCL asks for an A\*, it needs 5.8.

TMUA: for the 2027 cycle, all applicants sit the Test of Mathematics for University Admission. It is run by University Admissions Tests UK in the same windows as TARA (12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027). There is a fee for the test.

English language: Level 2 – IELTS at least 7.0, with no component below 6.5.

Law (LLB)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Fee: £36,800 per year (2027/28)
  • UCAS code: M100
  • Deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Requirements: the A-level offer is A\*AA, with no specific subjects required. For the Bulgarian diploma this means an overall mark of at least 5.65 and two state matriculation exams at 5.8 and 5.5.

LNAT: all Law applicants must sit the Law National Aptitude Test before their application is considered. Registration for 2027 entry opened on 1 August 2026 and testing started on 1 September 2026. For UCL you must sit the LNAT on or before 31 December 2026. You book the test yourself at a Pearson VUE test centre, and slots fill up – book early.

English language: Level 4 – IELTS at least 7.5, with no component below 7.0.
