About the university

General information

  • Location: Manchester, United Kingdom. Most teaching takes place on the main campus along Oxford Road, close to the city centre.
  • Founded: 1824, as the Manchester Mechanics' Institution. Today's university was created in 2004, when the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST merged.
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Main fields: engineering, computer science, natural sciences, medicine, business and management, economics, law and psychology. The university is organised into three faculties: Biology, Medicine and Health; Humanities; and Science and Engineering.
  • Length of a bachelor's degree: usually 3 years; 4 years with a year abroad or in industry where the course offers it. Medicine takes 5 years.
  • Fees: applicants from Bulgaria normally pay the international fee unless they have settled or pre-settled status in the UK. The fee depends on the course – for 2027 entry, for example, £29,800 a year for Law, £35,300 for Economics and £39,700 for Computer Science. The fee is not fixed for the whole degree: from the second year onwards the university may increase it by up to 7% a year. The 2027 fees for Medicine have not been published yet; for 2026/27 they are £39,900 a year for years 1–2 and £60,900 a year for the clinical years 3–5.

Deadlines

Undergraduate

You apply through UCAS. For entry in the 2027/28 academic year, applications opened on 12 May 2026 and run until:

  • 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time – Medicine and Dentistry
  • 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time – all other undergraduate courses (UCAS equal consideration deadline)

After 13 January you can still apply to courses that have places left until 30 June 2027; after that, applications go through Clearing. Popular courses rarely have places left, so aim for the January deadline.

Medicine requires the UCAT. For Computer Science, Economics and Law, the course pages do not list an additional admissions test.

Requirements when applying from Bulgaria

Manchester accepts the Bulgarian Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie, the Diploma za Zavarsheno Sredno Obrazovanie and the Diploma za Sredno Spetzialno Obrazovanie. To be considered for the first year of a bachelor's degree, you need an overall average of at least 5. For courses with A-level offers from ABB to A\*A\*A\*, the university usually asks for an overall average between 5.0 and 5.9, with no exam below 5.0.

If a course requires a specific subject (for example Mathematics), you are expected to take it as a state matriculation exam. For courses asking for an A or A\* in that subject, the university may ask for a 5 or 6 in the exam.

All applicants, including those from the UK, must prove their English. The required IELTS score is set per course.

Courses

Computer Science (BSc)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Fee: £39,700 per year (2027 entry)
  • UCAS code: G400
  • Deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Requirements: the A-level offer is A\*AA, with an A\* in Mathematics and at least one science subject from Computer Science, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics. For the Bulgarian diploma, Mathematics must be taken as a state matriculation exam, and because the course asks for an A\*, expect a requirement of 5 or 6 in it.

Admissions test: none at present.

Good to know: you can hold an offer for only one course in the Department of Computer Science, so do not apply to more than one of its courses.

English language: IELTS at least 6.5, with no component below 6.5.

Economics (BSc)

  • Duration: 3 years, or 4 years with a year abroad or in industry
  • Fee: £35,300 per year (2027 entry)
  • UCAS code: L102
  • Deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time

Requirements: the A-level offer is AAA including Mathematics; applicants with two subjects from the university's list (e.g. economics, mathematics, accounting, business studies, geography, psychology) are preferred. For the Bulgarian diploma, Mathematics should be taken as a state matriculation exam.

English language: IELTS at least 6.5, with no component below 6.0.

Law (LLB)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Fee: £29,800 per year (2027 entry)
  • UCAS code: M100

Requirements: the A-level offer is A\*AA, including at least one subject from the university's list (e.g. law, economics, mathematics, government and politics, sociology, philosophy); applicants with two of them are preferred. The course page does not list the LNAT.

English language: IELTS at least 7.0, with no component below 6.5. Only IELTS tests taken in person at an official test centre are accepted.
