  • Founded: 1855
  • Language of instruction: all bachelor's programmes are mainly in German. From the second year, some specialised lectures and exams are held in English.
  • Main fields (bachelor's): architecture and civil engineering, engineering sciences (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering), computer science, mathematics and natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology)

Deadlines

The standard deadline for applicants with a foreign diploma, including Bulgarian, is 31 March for a start in the autumn.

Semesters

  • Autumn semester: mid-September to the end of December; lectures start around 14–15 September. The exam period is traditionally not until January or August.
  • Spring semester: mid-February to early June

Requirements

A secondary-school leaving diploma, in which, during the last two years before graduation, the following were studied:

  • mathematics
  • physics, chemistry or biology
  • the language of instruction or a foreign language

These subjects must have been part of the school-leaving exams, with an average result of at least 70% of the maximum grade. In addition, over the last three years, four further subjects must have been studied from among: physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, a further language, geography, history, economics.

Proof of university admission (Studienplatznachweis): official confirmation from an accredited Bulgarian university (for example Sofia University or the Technical University of Sofia) that you have been admitted to the same programme. If you don't yet have this document by 31 March (because exams in Bulgaria are later), ETH allows you to upload it later, but this must be requested through the portal.

German language at C1 level: Goethe-Zertifikat C1, TestDaF with a minimum of 4 in all sections, telc C1 Hochschule or DSH-2.

Application fee: CHF 150

If the requirements are not met: you can sit a shortened entrance exam in mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. The fee is CHF 550.
