About the university

General information

  • Location: Enschede, the Netherlands. The university has a large green campus – the only campus in the Netherlands where everything is in one place.
  • Founded: 1961
  • Language of instruction: English and Dutch; a large proportion of bachelor's programmes are in English
  • Main fields: Computer Science, Data Science & AI, engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, chemical science and engineering, civil engineering, industrial design, biomedical technology, psychology, business and management, communication science and sustainable technology. UT is strongly focused on technology and interdisciplinary programmes.
  • Distinctive feature: a technology-focused research university with around 12,000 students, of whom approximately 35% are international. The emphasis is on technology, entrepreneurship and societal impact.

Deadlines

  • 1 July – the usual deadline for EU/EEA applicants, including Bulgarians with a foreign diploma
  • 15 January – for numerus fixus programmes; for 2026/27 these are Psychology and the Dutch-taught Technical Medicine

Applying: first through Studielink, after which documents are uploaded online in OSIRIS. You can also apply before receiving your diploma, if you're in your final year of school.

Start: the main bachelor's intake is in September; there is no February intake for bachelor's programmes.

English language: international applicants must meet the official requirements – UT accepts, for example, Cambridge C1 Advanced, as well as TOEFL with certain minimum scores.

Important: programmes require passes in the relevant subjects in your school-leaving exams.

Advanced Technology

A programme for people interested in science and technology who don't want to limit themselves to one field – it combines electrical engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nanotechnology, robotics and more.

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Location: Enschede
  • Start: once a year – 1 September
  • Language: entirely in English
  • Admission: no numerus fixus – there is no limited number of places or ranking, but there is a compulsory matching procedure (matching / studiekeuzecheck)
  • Deadline: for EU/EEA applicants with an international diploma, usually by 1 July; the application starts in Studielink and is completed in UT's system

Matching: there is no selection test or ranking. The compulsory participation is meant to check whether the programme is a good fit for you:

  • a questionnaire about your motivation, expectations and preparation
  • taking part in a matching day
  • practical tasks in mechanics, materials science and mathematical analysis
  • meetings with lecturers and current students
  • at the end you receive a recommendation (matching advice)

The recommendation is not binding – it can be positive, positive with notes, or advice to reconsider your choice, but it does not by itself decide admission. However, if you don't take part at all, your enrolment may not be finalised. For a September 2027 start, matching days have been announced for 16 April, 4 June and 2 July 2027; there is also an online option for international applicants.

Requirements: a diploma equivalent to Dutch VWO, a good level in mathematics and physics (comparable to Mathematics Higher Level and Physics Higher Level) and demonstrated English proficiency. The official Dutch page lists Mathematics B, physics and chemistry as required subjects.

Core subjects: mathematical analysis, linear algebra, mechanics, electronics, thermodynamics, materials science, nanotechnology, electromagnetism, systems dynamics, signals and systems, programming and scientific computing.
