About the university

General information

  • Location: Eindhoven, the Netherlands. TU/e's main campus is in the central part of the city.
  • Founded: 1956
  • Distinctive feature: a strongly technically oriented university and part of 4TU together with TU Delft, the University of Twente and Wageningen University & Research. Particularly strong fields are engineering, Computer Science, AI, Data Science and High-Tech Systems.

Deadlines

  • 1 May – for most programmes starting in September
  • 15 January – for programmes with numerus fixus or selection, for example Computer Science and Engineering

Applications start in Studielink and are completed in TU/e's own system.

Academic year: usually starts in early September and is divided into Semester A and Semester B, with four teaching periods (quarters) in total.

Requirements for a Bulgarian diploma: the required subjects – mathematics and, depending on the programme, physics and chemistry – must be profile or elective subjects and must be taken as matura exams, with a grade of at least 3.00 in each. If they are not profile subjects, or you don't have a matura in all of them, this can be compensated for with a VWO certificate (in Mathematics B, physics or chemistry).

Bachelor's programmes

Computer Science and Engineering

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Start: once a year, in September
  • Language: entirely in English
  • Admission: limited places and a selection procedure
  • Deadline: for 2026/27 – 15 January
  • Application fee: €100 per application, non-refundable; proof of payment is uploaded in the online form

Selection: TU/e's own special procedure, part of which is the Algorithmic Thinking Test – the official practice test has 12 questions in 45 minutes.

Requirements: a diploma equivalent to the Dutch VWO, and strong mathematics at VWO Mathematics B level.

Core subjects: programming, algorithms, data structures, logic, discrete mathematics, computer systems, software engineering, automata and complexity, and other foundational areas. The emphasis on programming, algorithms, software engineering and computer systems is considerably stronger than in Data Science.

Data Science

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Location: Eindhoven and Tilburg – the programme is a joint one between TU/e and Tilburg University
  • Start: once a year, in September
  • Language: entirely in English
  • Admission: no numerus fixus – it is enough to meet the academic requirements; there is no competitive test
  • Deadline: 1 May
  • Application: through TU/e, even though the programme is a joint one

Requirements: a diploma equivalent to VWO, a sufficiently high level of mathematics (a matura in mathematics) and proven English.

Core subjects: calculus, programming, data analysis, statistics, linear algebra, machine learning, econometrics, data management, AI, as well as law, ethics and business. The programme is not purely technical – it combines mathematics, programming, statistics and AI with business, law and ethics.

Important: in the first year, classes are split roughly between Eindhoven and Tilburg, so you should plan for travel between the two cities.

Applied Physics

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Start: once a year, in September
  • Language: English
  • Admission: no separate competitive procedure – TU/e checks the diploma, the required subjects and English
  • Deadline: usually 1 May

Requirements for a Bulgarian diploma: in practice, a matura in mathematics and a matura in physics, with a minimum of 3.00.

Core subjects: calculus, mechanics, electromagnetism, waves, thermodynamics, quantum physics, mathematical physics, experimental physics, programming, modelling and simulation. From the first years you work with derivatives, integrals, differential equations, vectors and physical models. There is also programming (Python, NumPy, Matplotlib), but the programme is above all physics-and-engineering focused, not Computer Science.

Electrical Engineering

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Start: once a year, in September
  • Language: English
  • Admission: no numerus fixus and no competitive test – TU/e checks the diploma, the required subjects and English
  • Deadline: usually 1 May

Requirements for a Bulgarian diploma: a matura in mathematics and a matura in physics, with a minimum of 3.00.

Core subjects: mathematics, physics, electrical circuits, electronics, programming, signals and systems, electromagnetism, digital systems, control and electrical power systems. There are also practical engineering and programming projects, for example the introductory Programming and Engineering Challenge course. TU/e also offers teaching in areas such as semiconductor technology and future electrical power systems.
