City: Mannheim. Founded: 1907. Campus: Mannheimer Schloss.

About the university

General information

  • Location: Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg. A large part of the university is housed in the Mannheimer Barockschloss – one of the largest baroque palace complexes in Europe.
  • Founded: its roots go back to 1907, when the Städtische Handelshochschule Mannheim was founded. It has carried its current name, Universität Mannheim, since 1967.
  • Profile: best known for its strong programmes in business administration (BWL), economics (VWL), business informatics, social and political sciences, psychology and law, and for combinations of economics with the humanities or social sciences. Even many programmes outside economics can be combined with economic subjects.
  • Distinctive feature: a very strong reputation in business, economics and the social sciences – especially interesting for applicants aiming at a career in consulting, finance, banking, management, economics, data and business analytics or international business.

Admission and deadlines

Admission depends on the programme. Many of the most popular bachelor's programmes, such as BWL, have restricted admission (NC).

Bachelor's programmes start in the autumn/winter semester only – Universität Mannheim has no standard bachelor's intake in the summer semester.

Deadlines 2026/27

  • 1 June – 15 July 2026 – many restricted-admission programmes, including BWL
  • by 31 August 2026 – some other bachelor's programmes

Semesters

Mannheim keeps its own semester dates (Mannheimer Semesterzeiten): the autumn/winter semester starts earlier than at most German universities – classes usually begin as early as September, and the spring/summer semester in February.

Bachelor's programmes

Business Administration (BWL)

  • Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
  • Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
  • Location: mainly the Mannheimer Schloss and the neighbouring buildings in central Mannheim
  • Start: once a year – in the autumn/winter semester, with classes starting as early as September
  • Language: roughly half German and half English – very good command of both is required
  • Admission: restricted (NC). There is no fixed cut-off in advance; applicants are ranked by set criteria.
  • Places: around 400 a year
  • Deadline: for 2026/27 – 1 June – 15 July 2026. There is no separate earlier deadline for older diplomas.

Selection criteria: besides the overall grade, the university looks at:

  • the grade in mathematics
  • the grade in German
  • the continued foreign language
  • practical experience in business
  • extracurricular activities related to the programme
  • very good English

Distinctive feature: a very strong international focus – the university has more than 200 partner business schools, and the programme includes the option of studying abroad.

International Business (IBEA)

IBEA (International Business Education Alliance) is not a separate bachelor's degree but a special international option within BWL:

  • Applying: you first need to be admitted to BWL; you apply for IBEA separately within the university during your studies, not directly after school
  • Duration: the programme is extended to 8 semesters instead of the standard 6
  • International semesters: three international stages at partner business schools in the USA, Singapore and Brazil, instead of one standard semester abroad
  • Language: a highly international programme with a large share of English
  • Degree: it remains the Universität Mannheim bachelor's degree in BWL
  • Suited to: applicants interested in international management, consulting, finance, multinational companies and an international career

Economics (VWL)

  • Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
  • Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
  • Location: Universität Mannheim, Mannheim
  • Start: autumn/winter semester only; around 220 new students are admitted each year
  • Language: German and English – the share depends on the courses you choose
  • Admission: restricted (NC). Selection takes into account the diploma grade and certain practical activities related to economics.
  • Deadline: for 2026/27 – 1 June – 15 July 2026. Applications also run through Hochschulstart's DoSV, in parallel with the university's own portal.

Guide to the competition: the faculty notes that, with a German Abitur, applicants with around 2.5 or better had good chances in recent rounds. This is not a fixed NC and cannot be transferred directly to a Bulgarian diploma.

What is not assessed separately: unlike BWL, VWL gives no separate points for grades in mathematics, German or a foreign language, and there is no test, motivation letter or interview. What counts is the overall grade and related practical or professional activities.

Recommended preparation: the university particularly stresses strong mathematics, an interest in economic questions, logical thinking and the ability to interpret mathematical results in economic terms.

Core subjects: micro- and macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, international economics, financial markets, economic policy and empirical economic research.
