Postgraduate

Semesters
- Winter semester: 1 October – 31 March
- Summer semester: 1 April – 30 September
- Important: the payment deadline when enrolling for the winter semester is 15 September.
Courses – undergraduate
Computer Science
- Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
- Location: Garching campus, near Munich
- Start: winter semester only
- Language: mainly German; individual modules may be in English
- Fee: €97 per semester
- Application: 15 May – 15 July
Requirements: a VPD is required; state matriculation exams are not mandatory. Admission takes into account your specific grades in maths, German, English and one science subject studied through to graduation (for example physics, computer science, chemistry or biology). You need grades in these subjects from the last four school terms – if these are missing, direct admission at the first stage is not possible.
Procedure (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren): at the first stage, TUM assesses your overall diploma average, your grades in maths, German, English and the science subject or computer science, plus any professional experience, internships or additional qualifications. The result is calculated in points:
- 84 points or more – direct admission
- 73–83 points – invitation to a written test
- 72 points or fewer – rejection
Applicants with a mid-range result are invited to an in-person test in Garching. For the 2026/27 winter semester, the test was held on 21 August 2026.
Mechanical Engineering
- Duration: 6 semesters (3 years), 180 ECTS
- Location: Garching campus
- Start: winter semester only
- Language: German
- Application: 15 May – 15 July
Requirements: at the first stage TUM assesses your overall average, your grade in maths, your grade in German, your grade in at least one science subject or computer science (for example physics, chemistry or computer science), and additional qualifications such as internships, competitions or vocational training. In practice, maths and physics matter most, although the procedure also allows for another science subject studied over a longer period. As a guide, TUM states that applicants with a German grade of around 2.5–2.8 are usually invited to interview.
Placement: before the course starts you need at least 8 weeks of practical work placement. It does not have to be finished by the application deadline – it can usually be done after the deadline and before the semester, for example between August and October.
Business Information Systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik)
- Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
- Location: mainly Garching campus
- Start: first semester winter only; in the summer semester, only transfers into the second or a higher semester are possible
- Language: German
- Application: 15 May – 15 July
Requirements: similar to Computer Science. Your overall average and your grades in maths, German, English, economics or law, and science or computer science are assessed. Depending on the points, you are admitted directly, invited to a written test, or rejected.
Business Administration (TUM-BWL)
- Duration: 6 semesters (3 years), 180 ECTS
- Location: TUM School of Management in Munich; some of the technical modules are held in Garching
- Start: winter semester only
- Language: German and English for most technical tracks; entirely in English only for the Computer Engineering specialisation
- Application: 15 May – 15 July
Requirements: at the first stage, your overall average, your grades from the last two years in maths, in English or German, and in your best science or technical subject studied over a longer period (for example computer science, physics, chemistry, biology or technology) are assessed. Depending on the result, you are admitted directly, invited to an admissions test, or rejected. For 2026 entry, the main online test was held on 7 August 2026.
