About the university
General information
- Location: Berlin. The main campus is in Charlottenburg, around Straße des 17. Juni and Ernst-Reuter-Platz; the university also has sites in Wedding and Dahlem.
- Founded: its roots go back to several older technical schools, from which the Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin was created in 1879. After the Second World War the university was re-founded in 1946 under its current name, Technische Universität Berlin.
- Profile: one of the largest and best-known technical universities in Germany. Its particular strengths are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering (Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen), civil engineering, architecture, transport (Verkehrswesen), mathematics and natural sciences, and economics and management.
- Language of instruction: all standard bachelor's programmes are taught in German. At master's level there are considerably more programmes taught entirely in English.
- Distinctive feature: TU Berlin is part of the Berlin University Alliance together with Humboldt-Universität, Freie Universität Berlin and Charité. The alliance is part of Germany's Excellence Strategy and brings the four institutions together in research and interdisciplinary projects.
Admission and applying
Admission depends on the programme – there are programmes with restricted admission (NC) and programmes with open admission.
With a Bulgarian diploma: you first need a VPD from uni-assist. Uni-assist checks whether your diploma qualifies you for university study and converts your grade to the German system. You then apply directly through TU Berlin's application portal (tuPORT).
For bachelor's programmes with restricted admission you also need to register with Hochschulstart, which issues the BID and BAN numbers for your application to TU Berlin.
Deadlines
Bachelor's – summer semester 2027
- Restricted-admission programmes (NC): 1 December 2026 – 15 January 2027
- Open-admission programmes: 1 December 2026 – 28 February 2027
Bachelor's – winter semester
- Restricted-admission programmes (NC): 1 June – 15 July
Bachelor's programmes
Computer Science (Informatik)
- Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
- Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
- Location: mainly the Charlottenburg campus
- Start: winter semester only (October)
- Language: German. English matters for technical literature but is not the main language of teaching.
- Admission: restricted (NC). From the 2026/27 winter semester TU Berlin is introducing a revised programme with a stronger focus on current digital fields and artificial intelligence.
- Deadline: for the 2026/27 winter semester – 1 June – 15 July 2026; the same deadline applies to foreign diplomas
Applying from Bulgaria:
- a Bulgarian diploma that qualifies you for higher education (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung)
- a VPD from uni-assist beforehand
- once you have the VPD, an application directly in tuPORT
- proof of German language skills
Suited to: applicants with a strong interest in mathematics, logic, programming, artificial intelligence, software development, data science and IT systems.
Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenbau)
- Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
- Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
- Location: Charlottenburg campus
- Start: in the winter and in the summer semester – an important difference from computer science
- Language: German. Some modules may be in English, but English is not a formal admission requirement.
- Admission: restricted (NC)
- Deadlines: 2026/27 winter semester – 1 June – 15 July 2026; 2027 summer semester – 1 December 2026 – 15 January 2027
Applying from Bulgaria:
- a recognised Bulgarian secondary-school diploma
- a VPD from uni-assist before applying
- then an application through tuPORT
- proof of the required level of German
- a good grounding in mathematics, physics and technical subjects is strongly recommended, although it is not a separate formal requirement
Distinctive feature: the programme gives you a relatively large choice of specialisation modules, so in the later semesters you can steer towards the areas that interest you.
Architecture (Architektur)
- Duration: 3 years (6 semesters), 180 ECTS
- Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
- Location: mainly the Charlottenburg campus
- Start: first-semester admission is mainly in the winter semester
- Language: German; some of the specialist literature and individual courses may be in English
- Admission: restricted (NC). Competition in architecture is usually stronger than in some classic engineering programmes.
- Deadline: for the winter semester usually 1 June – 15 July; check TU Berlin for the exact dates of the year
Applying from Bulgaria:
- a recognised Bulgarian secondary-school diploma
- a VPD from uni-assist
- then an application through tuPORT
- proof of the required level of German
- your diploma and transcript of grades, with official translations where needed
Portfolio: the standard application for the B.Sc. Architektur at TU Berlin does not, in principle, require a classic art portfolio (Eignungsmappe) – admission follows the general rules. This is an important difference from some art academies and architecture programmes.
Distinctive feature: the programme is strongly project-based – much of the teaching consists of design projects, drawings, models and presentations rather than only classic exams.
