About the university
General information
- Location: the main campus is DTU Lyngby Campus, around 15 km north of Copenhagen. DTU also has campuses in Ballerup, Risø, Hirtshals and Sisimiut (Greenland).
- Founded: 1829, by the physicist Hans Christian Ørsted
- Language of instruction: Danish and English. Most of the classic bachelor's programmes are in Danish; the main full bachelor's programme in English is BSc General Engineering.
- Fees: EU/EEA students pay no standard fee for full-time study
Deadlines and applying
- Deadline: 15 March, 12:00 noon Danish time for applicants with a foreign diploma, including from Bulgaria – regardless of whether they are from the EU/EEA or not. Applications open on 1 February.
- Applying: online through Optagelse.dk. Documents are uploaded digitally. If you don't have a Danish CPR number, the signed Signature Page is also uploaded electronically to UnistartDTU – DTU explicitly does not accept it by post.
- If you haven't graduated yet: you can apply with your current documents, but your final diploma and grades must be submitted by 5 July, 12:00 noon.
Requirements: a diploma recognised as equivalent to Danish upper-secondary education, and the subject requirements met for the chosen programme. For foreign diplomas, DTU converts each subject's level individually.
Pre-assessment: international applicants can request in advance an assessment of whether their diploma and subjects meet the requirements – between 1 September and 1 November before applying. This is especially useful for students from Bulgarian language schools.
Bachelor's programmes
General Engineering (in English)
- Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
- Location: DTU Lyngby Campus
- Start: once a year, in September
- Language: entirely in English – DTU's main full bachelor's programme in English
- Admission: no classic numerus fixus as in the Netherlands, but you must meet all the general and subject requirements
- Deadline: 15 March, 12:00 noon Danish time
- Applying: online, through the Danish centralised procedure. If you haven't graduated yet, your final diploma and grades are submitted later, within DTU's deadline.
Subject requirements: a level equivalent to Mathematics A, Physics B, Chemistry B and English B. DTU converts the levels from your foreign diploma into the Danish system.
My advice: for students from a language school, I recommend using DTU's Pre-assessment (1 September – 1 November) before applying. This way the university will tell you in advance whether your specific Bulgarian curriculum covers Math A, Physics B and Chemistry B. If a subject falls short, DTU accepts certain additional courses or exams to compensate.
First year: mathematics, programming, physics, chemistry, biotechnology, statistics and design-build engineering projects.
Structure: the first year gives you a broad engineering foundation; after that you choose a specialisation, and in the second and third years you have more specialised and elective courses.
Focus: interdisciplinary engineering – mathematics, physics, chemistry, programming, biotechnology and work on real engineering problems.
International environment: around 60% of students are international, around 40% are Danish.
