About the university

General information

  • Location: the main campus is in Aarhus, Denmark. The university also has activities in other cities, but most bachelor's programmes are in Aarhus.
  • Founded: 1928
  • Language of instruction: Danish and English. Most bachelor's programmes are in Danish, but there are also several entirely in English – for 2026, for example, Computer Science, Data Science, IT Product Development, Cognitive Science and Economics and Business Administration.
  • Fees: no tuition fee for citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland
  • Start: the main bachelor's intake is in August/September. Some engineering programmes also have a winter intake, but not all of them.
  • Distinctive feature: Aarhus University is a large, classic research university, not only a technical one – it is strong in Computer Science, Data Science and engineering, as well as in business, medicine, and the social sciences and humanities.

Important for 2027 admission: the university has announced that it will reduce places on its English-language bachelor's programmes from 436 to 272.

Deadlines and applying

  • Deadline: 15 March, 12:00 noon Central European Time for applicants with a Bulgarian or other international diploma. The system opens on 1 February.
  • Applying: online through the Danish centralised system Optagelse.dk. Documents are uploaded digitally; certified copies are required for international applicants.
  • If you haven't graduated yet: you can apply before your final diploma is issued. As a rule, final documents must be submitted by 5 July, 12:00 noon.

Admission system: in Denmark there is Quota 1 and Quota 2. Quota 1 is based mainly on your converted diploma grade average, while Quota 2 may include an additional assessment depending on the programme. Some programmes also use uniTEST.

Requirements: a recognised diploma and the subject requirements met for the chosen programme – for example a set level in mathematics, physics or chemistry.

Bachelor's programmes

Computer Science

  • Duration: 3 years, 180 ECTS
  • Location: Aarhus
  • Start: once a year, in August/September
  • Language: entirely in English
  • Admission: a limited number of places. For 2026, the minimum score in Quota 1 was 11.4 on the Danish scale, and 10.5 on the waiting list – relatively high competition.
  • Deadline: 15 March, through Optagelse.dk

Procedure: there is no separate test. Applicants are assessed in Quota 1 or Quota 2:

  • Quota 1 – based mainly on your converted diploma grade average
  • Quota 2 – grades in relevant subjects and any additional qualifications, for example programming, software development, AI or IT security

Subject requirements: Mathematics A and English B. A and B are Danish subject levels, not grades – AU assesses whether the subjects on your Bulgarian diploma are equivalent.

Condition for Quota 1: your converted overall average must be at least 6.0 on the Danish scale, as must your Mathematics A grade. If this is not met, your application is considered only in Quota 2.

My assessment: if your goal is Computer Science in Aarhus, a Bulgarian average of 5.80–6.00 is far more competitive, while 5.50 may already be risky for Quota 1 with a cut-off around 11.4.

Core subjects: programming, algorithms, data structures, discrete mathematics, computer systems, software development, machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, cybersecurity and the theoretical foundations of Computer Science. Prior programming experience is not required.
